First presented in Nicosia in 2014, The Performance Shop brings its third edition to the Greek capital as part of this year’s Athens and Epidaurus festival. Its creator, Lia Haraki, is a contemporary dance artist based in Cyprus and one of the artists that represented Cyprus at the 55th Venice Biennale. She joins an array of Athens-based performers: 12 young Greek artists and groups selected through an open call process, along with invited artists vocalist Anna Pagalou and choreographer Ana Sanchez-Colberg. The works presented range from a wide spectrum of disciplines and practices including free improvisation and participatory dance theatre.
The Performance Shop is an actual pop-up shop where art-goers and passers-by can watch but also participate in performances. As the name implies, the audience is given the opportunity to purchase the performance of their preference from a catalogue, just like they would do in an emporium. Or they may watch the on-display public events taking place in the shop’s window front. The shop also provides performances tailored for smaller audiences, plus a workshop and artist talks. Taking the form of a festival within a festival, The Performance Shop explores performance art as a commodified product and intricates the exchange between artist and spectator.
