Looking for Andy Warhol at Be Seen Project Space
Be Seen/Project Space in Halandri presents the art exhibition titled Looking for Andy Warhol.
Starting point for the exhibition is the work of Andy Warhol, the absolute pop idol of America and the pioneer of Pop Art. How current are the multiple reprints of Marylin, Elvis or Jackie Kennedy's portraits on super 8 film, especially at a time when selfies flood social media like Facebook and Instagram?
This idea of the multiple work of art, of the mechanical reproduction of the portraits of famous stars or even common people that posed for Warhol comes to remind us what it means to construct or design the self image today.
Countering abstract expressionism and a painting that seeks its pure self-definition, Warhol dares to "tweak" great masterpieces of the history of art like The Last Supper or the Mona Lisa by da Vinci, adding colour to them and elevating their copy to the status of an artistic creation in par with the original.
The apex of Warhol's artistic ingenuity? The facsimile of a Brillox detergent box or the repetitive representation of Campel's canned soup — as we find out later, the artist's daily lunch — become meeting points and connection points between mass culture and high art.
