Sub Rosa Space presents a performance by Athens-based dance artist Konstantinos Anastasiades, as part of an event organized parallel to Art Athina Contemporary Art Fair. The performance will take place on Saturday 23 June 2018 continuously from 15:00 to 19:00.
The Kardashian Is Present is a durational installation-performance by Konstantinos Anastasiades that appropriates a well-known work by Marina Abramovic in order to explore the nuances of how we consume and relate to images in contemporary social-media culture. The performer reenacts the conditions of Abramovic’s The Artist Is Present: a durational performance that took place in 2010 and for which the artist spent eight hours every day for three months inside a gallery at MoMA and looked into the eyes of strangers. Drawing comparisons between Abramovic’s endurance heroics, social-media narcissism and his own obsession with the TV series Keeping up with the Kardashians, Anastasiades puts himself in a situation where he stares into a screen showing Kim Kardashian’s face for hours at a time, thus objectifying himself and turning the performance into what he describes as a “dialogue of objects”. Sub Rosa Space, a former office space in downtown Athens, is transformed into a shrine where Kim Kardashian’s face takes a central position as a glaring digital altarpiece and which the performer worships with his unwavering gaze. On a table across the room, a dossier with additional materials provides context and conceptual background to the work, the result of the artist’s own research.
The performance The Kardashian Is Present was originally devised as part of an educational course at Deree — The American College of Athens (November 2017). It has then been performed at Depo Darm Gallery as part of the exhibition The Vision of Saint Void (December 2017), curated by Kiriakos Spirou. The work’s manifestation at Sub Rosa Space will be its longest in duration to date.
