02.07.2019

The Association Phenomenon and the Kerenidis Pepe Collection are pleased to announce the third edition of Phenomenon, the biennial project for contemporary art held in the Aegean island of Anafi, Greece, which will take place between 1-14 July 2019.

Phenomenon 3 will include a residency with a series of performances, lectures, video screenings and other events (1-7July) and an exhibition in outdoor and indoor spaces throughout the island (opening 6 July, until 14 July).

For its third edition, Phenomenon will investigate the role of art in times of political urgency. After decades of catastrophic economic and social policies, an alternative, more humane future has become unimaginable for many people. In times like this, when authoritarian ideologies prevail, populism thrives, and the other is considered a threat, art has an important role to play.

Art gives us the possibility to reimagine the world, by deconstructing the normative or the obvious, and by allowing for a proliferation of perspectives and situated knowledges. By questioning singular points of view, art has the potential to create non-hierarchical ways of collective life, to enable other forms of social engagement, and to produce spaces for dialogue and action.

Through art, Phenomenon 3 will be looking for strategies that enable unstable encounters of multidimensional forces that can lead to unexpected alliances and multiple agencies. How can we circumvent systems of violence and domination and reclaim a liveable life for everyone based on mutual respect of difference? Where systemic politics seem to have failed, art offers creative ways of realising the political potential of the affective in strategies of persistence, resistance and subversion.

The function of art is to do more than
tell it like it is; it’s to imagine what’s possible.
– Bell Hooks
