The opening will take place on Saturday 28 April, 20:00 (performance at 21:30) at Sub Rosa Space (Praxitelous 37, 3rd floor). Opening hours will take place from 3-6 May, 16:00-20:00 on Thursday-Friday, 13:00-17:00 Saturday-Sunday).
Peter Max Lawrence is an interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker. Over the course of his career, he has created a large and diverse body of work exploring a variety of approaches, media, and techniques. Among his recent films of note are ‘QUEER in KANSAS’, ‘Warholics’ and the short film ‘de Young’ that was featured on KQED’s Truly California. His visual art has been exhibited at the de Young Museum, Legion of Honor, African American Arts & Culture Center, San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, Leedy Voulkos Art Center, and the Kansas City (KS) Public Library.
The Umpire Strikes back is Lawrence’s second exhibition at Sub Rosa Space, his first exhibition having inaugurated the space in January of this year. As with his last show, Beyond Say: An American in Athens, this next offering takes a transgressive approach to themes of Americana. This time, the artist takes up that most American of pastimes—baseball—in order to question the politics of nostalgia. The evening will revolve around a solo performance by Lawrence, which will transition into a series of collective actions, experimentations, and play.
