At Phoenix Athens, Objects Disappear Under Layers of Reality and the Digital World

Phoenix Athens presents the group show Object not found! featuring works by Myrto Christou, Gina Dimakopoulou and Vangelis Savvas. The title refers to the on-going overload of layering in the physical as much as the digital world, which in the end overcome our reality and humans’ capacity. In this exhibition the layer works as illusion and as a strategy of concealment. How much do we value what is shown or what is hidden? Each artist is expressing his own social and personal concern using the space as a blank canvas. The artists create situations where the sculptures are made to be experienced close up.

Christou’s practice engages with the notion of skin and layering. Incorporating a richness of textures moving between visual thickening, condensation and transparency of materials her works often reflect the behaviour and materiality of the human skin. Christou deploys digital methods in order to transform the physical to digital and then convert it into a multi-layered physical object. Dimakopoulou is developing her initial idea of clothing as a second human skin into a hybrid version. The artist constructs various textures of tactile stimulation with the main characteristic the braille system, focusing on the notion of layers and identity. Savvas’ works with the interrelationship developed in the urban environment through its demarcation as a process of separation, conflict, and competition. The artist examines the abstract, without identity, spaces, their relationship with the human and their role as transitive stage between private and public.

The exhibition raises questions about the notion of materiality and identity as artists challenge the viewer to engage in the experience of observing the multi-level artwork and to examine the importance of texture, surface and material.
